Setting Standards in Percheron Breeding

// Windermere Farms Perchons

An Allebach Family Tradition

The Percheron is a breed of draft horse that originated in the Perche region of France. Its history can be traced back to ancient times, with its roots thought to date back to the 8th century.

During the Middle Ages, Percherons were highly regarded as War Horses, known for their strength, endurance, and ability to carry heavily armored knights into battle. They were used both in Europe and during the Crusades. The breed continued to be bred for strength and versatility, and by the 17th century, Percherons were widely recognized as excellent heavy draft horses.

As agricultural practices evolved, the Percheron breed’s role shifted to farm work. They were used for plowing fields, pulling heavy wagons, and hauling goods. Their sturdy build, power, and willingness to work made them popular among farmers.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Percheron breed caught the attention of American breeders and was imported to the United States. The breed flourished in North America, where it was used extensively in agriculture and played a significant role in the expansion of the frontier. Percherons were also utilized in various industries such as logging, transportation, and even as carriage horses in urban areas. They were particularly valued for their ability to adapt to different climates and terrains.

In the mid-20th century, changes in agricultural practices and the rise of mechanization led to a decline in the demand for draft horses, including Percherons. However, their historical significance and unique qualities as working horses have made them sought after for niche purposes like showmanship, parades, competitive pulling, and recreational driving.

Today, Percherons continue to be bred and appreciated for their gentle temperament, intelligence, and imposing appearance. They are also used in crossbreeding programs, contributing their strength and attributes to improve the qualities of other horse breeds.

The Allebach Family is one of the only breeders in the world that has shaped this breed back into its origins, a strong, masculine breed of War Horse. The fruits of their labor and family heritage have proven time and time again by holding the Supreme World Champions year after year. Our hats off to the Allebach family, specifically to Gerald, Melissa, their Son Abraham “Hammer” Allebach, and to Mr. Abraham and Mrs. Mary Allebach for starting this Amazing Family Heritage. We are also grateful to know that they use our Total Groom product on all of their show horses!
